Indiana Hoosiers QB Alberto Mendoza Is Entering NCAA Transfer Portal After National Championship Win

The Indiana Hoosiers received a punch to the gut after winning it all.

The Indiana Hoosiers experienced the highest of highs and then the lowest of lows within hours. Indiana football’s quarterback room has taken a huge shot.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Alberto Mendoza does not plan to play for the program. Fernando Mendoza will leave Indiana after winning the Heisman Trophy and bringing the school a national championship. His brother was seen as his successor, but that is no longer the case. He has decided to take a different path just hours after they lifted the trophy with Donald Trump in attendance.

Alberto Mendoza is entering the transfer portal, according to CBS Sports. His decision comes less than nine hours after the Hoosiers defeated Miami for the College Football Playoff National Championship. Alberto was the backup to his older brother, who will now head off into the NFL.

In limited action this season, the Indiana Hoosiers QB went 18-for-24 passing for 286 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception across nine appearances. He proved to be a dual threat as he rushed for 190 yards and one touchdown on just 13 attempts.

Fernando Mendoza went out and got the Indiana Hoosiers their first National Championship in school history. The reigning Heisman passed for 186 yards and zero touchdowns. His most memorable moment was jumping off the ground and scoring a running touchdown late in the second half.

Now, he is headed to the league. Not only that, his brother is transferring as well. Now, where do the Hoosiers go from here? Alberto will take his time over his decision. He will likely consider all his options in hopes of landing a starting job.

The Hoosiers will also begin looking for a new quarterback. They will undoubtedly have a number of quarterbacks at their disposal who would love to play for them. Indiana brought in former TCU quarterback Josh Hoover in the transfer portal, so they might already have their guy going forward.
