Bowl season continued on Jan. 2 with the Armed Forces Bowl between Rice and Texas State. Unfortunately, the game featured a somber moment with a serious injury.

The Armed Forces Bowl was momentarily brought to a halt on Friday. Rice Owls star Daveon Hook suffered a terrifying head injury during the game. Just before the contest, a parachuter nearly lost his life as he fell from the sky. His parachute got caught in one of the cables supporting the field goal netting.

Luckily, he was able to walk away. The same cannot be said for Hook. During the third quarter of the game, the Owls’ star safety was left needing urgent medical attention. The 5-foot-11, 184-pound senior took a hit to the neck while running after a receiver on a pass play.

He would lie motionless while medical professionals put him on a stretcher and stabilized his neck. The broadcast confirmed that Hook could move his upper extremities.

Texas State went on to secure a 41-10 victory over Rice on Friday. That result became a footnote to what happened to Daveon Hook.

With 1:16 remaining in the third quarter, Hook collided with a Texas State blocker while attempting to make a tackle. The hit left him down on the field for over 10 minutes. Almost 30,000 people remained quiet inside Amon G. Carter Stadium.

Hook was immobilized on a stretcher by a team of medical personnel and transported outside the stadium.

“When they took him off the field, he had feeling and movement everywhere,” Rice head coach Scott Abell said postgame.

“There was a lot of precaution, as there should be taken. We’ll see. I really don’t want to respond much because I don’t know a whole lot. We’ll check on him ASAP.”

It was confirmed that Daveon Hook talked to his head coach as he departed on the stretcher.

“He was moving everything,” Abell recalled of that moment. “We’ll get him checked out, and hopefully he is all good.”

Hook only appeared in four games this season. He recorded 20 total tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, and one sack.
