Iconic Pizza Chain Files for Bankruptcy and Shuts Down All U.S. Locations

It spent 50 years in the business.

A beloved pizza chain with half a century in business abruptly shut its doors and filed for bankruptcy.

After first opening its doors in 1975, the business grew from Minnetonka to other places, such as Chanhassen, Eden Prairie, Edina, and Plymouth.

The Ginna Maria’s Pizza owners filed for bankruptcy on March 26, according to the Daily Mail. The decision came after they closed all locations to the public in October.

Northern Brands Inc., the parent company of Gina Maria’s Pizza, filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. This means the business will likely be liquidated instead of restructured. It will sell off the remaining assets to pay nearly $3 million in debts. The company had just $64,000 in assets.

The former Eden Prairie location will be the home to Pizza Gina. Owner Ulises Godinez said he plans to keep the former restaurant’s legacy alive by using its recipes.

As a gesture of goodwill, the previous owners left kitchen tools and supplies to help the new restaurant.
