The vice president of the United States and his wife, the second lady of the United States, Usha Vance, attended the opening ceremonies for this year’s Olympics at San Siro in Milan, Italy.
But when Usha and JD Vance were shown on the big screen, they were met with some hard booes. Some users on X/Twitter claim that NBC News cut out the boos, but you can hear them on the feed from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC):
USA Today columnist Christine Brennan said she couldn’t recall an instance where someone was booed at the Olympics. Brennan added that in contrast to Vance, there were loud cheers for the American athletes:
The United States has 232 athletes performing at Milano Cortina 2026. They finished with 25 medals at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.
There is extra hype around the 2026 Winter Olympics because NHL players will compete in the games for the first time since 2014. The U.S. men’s ice hockey team aims to win its first best-on-best tournament since 1996, when it emerged victorious in the World Cup of Hockey.

If Usha and JC Vance were caught off guard by the cold reception? They could ask President Donald Trump all about it. The 79-year-old has been booed at numerous professional sporting events during his two presidential terms.
Trump was memorably booed at Game 5 of the 2019 World Series between the Washington Nationals and Houston Astros. Fans also heavily booed Donald Trump during the Detroit Lions-Washington Commanders game on Nov. 9.
President Trump stated that he won’t attend Super Bowl 60. Interestingly, it has been reported that he’s not going because Trump’s advisors warned him that he would be heavily booed at Levi’s Stadium.
