Social Media Is Destroying Team USA Hockey Star Matthew Tkachuk For Sexist ‘Gender Reveal’ Comment

Matthew Tkachuk has stirred hte post yet again.

Hockey fans are ripping on Team USA hockey Olympic gold medalist and Florida Panthers star Matthew Tkachuk after he announced some major personal life news.

Earlier this week, Matthew Tkachuk announced that he and his wife, Ellie, are expecting their first child. The thrilling news was shared less than three weeks after Tkachuk helped Team USA to a 2-1 win over Canada in the men’s ice hockey gold medal game at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Tkachuk announced the news during an appearance on the “Hang Out with Sean Hannity” podcast (h/t People). In the interview, Tkachuk told the Fox News personality that he’d like to have a boy:

“Yes, I mean, at some point, would definitely have to have a boy. I’ve been explaining to (my wife), because she has just a sister [and] no brothers…what youth hockey is like. And I think I’m more excited for youth hockey one day than my current hockey right now.”

“Like, honest to God, like, I can’t wait for the road trips. I can’t wait for, like the family to come. I can’t wait for the parents to be in the hotel lobby bar at night, talking about the day and like, oh, just the little things.”

Hockey fans took issue with Tkachuk’s remarks. You may recall that the men’s U.S. hockey team and President Donald Trump faced backlash over their phone call during the post-game celebration.

Trump also made an insulting comment about having to invite the women’s team to the White House, prompting laughter from some of the men’s players. The U.S. women’s team also won gold, defeating Team Canada 2-1 in the finals.

Fans took issue with Matthew Tkachuk’s comments, calling them sexist. Some also wondered why Tkachuk would say these things since him and Ellie may end up having a daughter.

“That poor baby girl is going to go through life calling him ‘father’ because dad sounds too much like a nickname and she’s not allowed to do that, per his rules,” one fan wrote.

“He could have a daughter that plays hockey too….but I forgot he doesn’t understand that women can play sports too. He could have a son who doesn’t want to play hockey. What will he do then?” asked a user.


“His daughter is going to love listening to this some day,” said another.

“He can do all of that with a daughter too 🙄,” wrote a user.

“I feel so bad for his wife🤢,” a fan added.

“Does he know women can play hockey too,” another stated.

President Trump invited the men’s and women’s national hockey teams to the White House and the State of the Union Address. The women’s team turned down the invitation, though most of the players from the men’s team attended both.

Tkachuk has missed most of the 2025-26 NHL season, recovering from offseason surgery for a torn adductor muscle and a sports hernia. The back-to-back Stanley Cup champions, however, are on the cusp of missing the postseason for the first time since 2019.
