Stefon Diggs Reportedly Shot Down Patriots’ One Last Request Before Getting Cut

The New England Patriots made a final decision on Stefon Diggs’ future. After one season, in which the Patriots returned to the Super Bowl for the first time since 2019, Diggs’ future was up in the air.

His salary cap charge would rise from $10.5 million to $26.5 million, which prompted the team to release the veteran wide receiver on Wednesday. Diggs signed a three-year, $69 million contract with the Pats last year after spending the 2024 season with the Houston Texans.

He made an immediate impact on the AFC East. Diggs recorded 85 receptions for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns, leading a receiving corps that had Mack Hollins, DeMario Douglas, and Kayshon Boutte.

According to Savage Sports, the Patriots used their final resource to make sure they didn’t part ways with Stefon Diggs. The 2025 AFC champions tried to restructure Diggs’ contract, but he rejected that possibility.

The report hasn’t been denied or confirmed. The only certainty now is that the move will free up $16.8 million in cap space for New England.

Stefon Diggs would have a strong market now, while the Patriots will try to find a proper replacement in free agency or through the draft, which appears to be Mike Vrabel’s preference.

“They’re not going to be there in free agency. You have to try to draft them. I think that’s where a lot of them are. You develop them,” Vrabel said at the combine last week.
