He’s walking away from the game after just six seasons.

NFL defensive end Bryce Huff has announced his retirement after six seasons in the league at just 27 years old.

Huff joined the San Francisco 49ers in a trade from the Philadelphia Eagles last offseason. He made 15 appearances for the former, registering 30 tackles, 13 quarterback hits, four sacks and two forced fumbles.

While it was by no means a remarkable year, Huff was a pretty dependable player in Robert Saleh’s defense.

A Super Bowl winner with the Eagles in 2025, Huff was still under contract with the Niners, who had him locked in for another season, at least so they thought.

The player took to Instagram this Thursday to announce his decision to walk away from football.

“I’m retiring from football,” he said in a video clip. “I started playing football when I was 4 years old. Growing up I wasn’t the biggest or the strongest, I didn’t really have many friends. Football kept me grounded, it gave me something to hold onto.”

Huff is retiring after 81 games, 108 tackles, 59 of which were solo, 24 sacks and four forced fumbles, per ESPN.

As for the Niners, they have been pretty busy in free agency. The NFC West franchise signed star wide receiver Mike Evans this week, handing him a three-year deal worth $60.4 million.

They have also traded for defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa from the Dallas Cowboys.

Huff’s retirement leaves the team short at the pass rush, so it will be interesting to see what they do.
