John Harbaugh Has His New Team, Both Sides Finalizing Deal To Make It Official

John Harbaugh has quickly decided on his next NFL team.

According to multiple reports, John Harbaugh and the New York Giants are finalizing a deal to make him their new head coach. The move would come nine days after Harbaugh was fired by the Baltimore Ravens.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Harbaugh and the Giants will sign the deal “barring a setback.” More from the NFL insider:

“The deal is not final and contract numbers still are being negotiated. ‘There still is a lot to work through,’ one source said. But barring any setbacks, Harbaugh is ready to accept the Giants’ deal and the Giants are expected to hire him as soon as possible, per sources.”

NFL insider Jordan Schultz also reported the news shortly before midnight.

Assuming Harbaugh is indeed bound for New York, that means eight head coaching vacancies remain. The biggest name is officially off the market. Former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin reportedly plans to take a break from coaching after abruptly resigning.

The Giants fired Brian Daboll after a 2-8 start and replaced him with Mike Kafka. However, the football team showed no improvement under Kafka, finishing 2-5 for a third consecutive season with 11-plus losses.

The Giants have sunk to extreme irrelevance since winning Super Bowl 46 back in the 2011 season. They have just two playoff appearances and a single postseason win since then.

A lack of coaching stability has been the driving force behind the Giants’ issues. Now, they have a Super Bowl-winning head coach with a .614 winning percentage and a Hall of Fame resume.

The Giants already have a promising young quarterback in Jaxson Dart, plus other young stars in Abdul Carter, Malik Nabers, Cam Skattebo and Andrew Thomas. With the No. 5 pick and plenty of cap space, the pieces are there for the Giants to turn things around quickly.

Harbaugh may have worn out his welcome, but he’s one of the best coaches of this generation. For the first time in over a decade, the future is awfully bright for the Giants.
