Authorities Have Identified National Guard Shooter [PHOTOS + VIDEO]

Rahmanullah Lakanwal is unlikely to see the light of day ever again.

Two National Guard members were shot on Wednesday in what appeared to be a “targeted” attack near the White House. The gunman was also shot and is in custody. It took a few hours, but he has since been identified as a 29-year-old Afghan national, Rahmanullah Lakanwal. The Guard members, who have not been identified, remain in critical condition as a result of his actions.

Jeffrey Carroll, an executive assistant to the D.C. police chief, said investigators had no information on a motive as to why he would carry out this shooting. Both guardsmen were shot in the head, according to NBC News. The White House had to be placed on lockdown as a result of the shooting.

Very little information has been released on Rahmanullah Lakanwal aside from his last known location being in Bellingham, Washington. He also entered the United States in 2021.

His decision to fire on the National guardsmen almost got him taken out as a third National Guard member shot him four times.

President Donald Trump Had a Strong Message For Rahmanullah Lakanwal

President Donald Trump knows what it is like to be shot at following the failed assassination attempt at a rally last year. Trump was leading a rally at the Butler Farm Show Grounds in Butler, Pennsylvania, when the 79-year-old got shot in the ear.

In September 2024, authorities arrested Ryan Wesley Routh after he spent 12 hours undetected outside Trump’s West Palm Beach golf course, aiming a rifle from a tree line.

This week, another frightening moment kicked off when a shooting occurred near 17th and I Streets NW, just northwest of the White House.

A suspect, later identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, in the shooting of two members of the National Guard on Wednesday, has been arrested. President Donald Trump wasted little time asking for 500 more National Guard members to be deployed to Washington, D.C.

Shortly after the attack, Trump would take to Truth Social to state the two National Guard members had been “critically wounded”, adding that the “animal” that shot them “is also severely wounded, but regardless, will pay a very steep price.”

Rahmanullah appears to be the only suspect in the shooting as the investigation continues to ensure that citizens remain safe.
