Terence Crawford has just surprised the boxing world with a withering statement after Canelo Álvarez demanded an immediate rematch.

The normally cool Crawford accused Canelo of “destroying the soul of boxing” and vowed: “I’d rather leave with a 42-0 record than give him one more minute of my career.”
This explosive statement has forced the PBC and Golden Boy into an emergency meeting, demanding a proper explanation, while the entire sport awaited Canelo’s response.
Las Vegas, November 15, 2025 – What seemed like a simple exchange of words after Canelo’s victory over Edgar Berlanga became the biggest earthquake that boxing has experienced in years.
In an exclusive interview with ESPN just 20 minutes after the fight, Terence Crawford, the man who never talks too much, broke his usual silence and dropped a bomb that no one saw coming.
“Listen carefully to what I’m going to say and I won’t repeat it,” Crawford began, his voice low but full of contained fury. “Canelo demands revenge. Perfect. But I prefer to retire tomorrow than share the ring with him again for even one more second.

Every time I see him in front of me I feel like I betray my legacy and my undefeated record. He doesn’t respect boxing. He uses it. He manipulates it. It turns it into a circus. And I am not part of that circus.”
The studio was completely silent. The interviewer, Mark Kriegel, could barely manage to stammer out a “Are you serious?” Crawford nodded slowly: “42-0. I’ll go with that rather than give one more minute of my career to someone who is destroying the soul of boxing.”
In less than an hour, the clip surpassed 28 million views on all platforms. #CrawfordSeRetira and #CaneloDestruyeElBoxeo became world trends number 1 and 2.
Canelo Álvarez’s immediate reaction From his dressing room in Las Vegas, Canelo published a video of just 18 seconds that accumulated 15 million views in 40 minutes: “Retire? Do it. Nobody forces you to fight me. But don’t make excuses. If you’re afraid, say it.

“Boxing doesn’t need cowards with a pretty record.”
Chaos on social networks
Tyson Fury: “Crawford saying this is bigger than any fight. Total respect.” Jake Paul: “This is better than any PPV. Have the fight or both of you retire!” Oscar De La Hoya: “I never saw Bud talk like that. Something very big happened behind the scenes.”
Crawford’s accusations: what really happened? Sources close to Crawford say the last straw was a private meeting three weeks ago. Supposedly, Canelo’s team would have demanded “ridiculous” clauses for the rematch:
Full control of the advertisement and promotion. Choice of gloves, referees and even the color of the ring. A rehydration clause that would exclusively benefit Canelo.

“Bud felt like it wasn’t a fight, it was a show where he would be the hired villain,” a member of Crawford’s team revealed to ESPN under anonymity.
The official response of the promoters At 2:17 in the morning, PBC and Golden Boy issued a joint statement: “Both parties are in talks to clarify the statements made tonight. The integrity of boxing is our priority. There will be an emergency meeting this week.”
The world of boxing, in shock
Manny Pacquiao: “Crawford never talks like that. If he says this, believe him.” Roy Jones Jr: “This is bigger than Mayweather-Pacquiao. It’s pride, legacy and honor.” Eddie Hearn (Benn promoter, but neutral here): “If Crawford retires because of this, boxing loses one of its last samurai.”

Crawford’s possible retirement: reality or strategy? At 38 years old, Crawford maintains a perfect record of 42-0 (31 KOs) and is considered by many to be the best pound for pound on the planet. Retiring undefeated would be historic, but it would also leave the biggest possible superfight of the moment unfinished.
And Canelo? The Mexican, at 62-2-2, remains the super middleweight king and the most profitable face in boxing. A refusal from Crawford would give him the perfect narrative: “The only undefeated man who was afraid of me.”
The purses at stake The rematch was projected to generate more than $180 million in PPV, the largest since Mayweather vs. Pacquiao. A Crawford retirement would cancel it out completely.
Crawford’s last word (25 minutes ago) In a second video posted on Instagram, Bud looked at the camera and closed: “It’s not fear. It’s respect for what this sport meant to me. If the fight is not clean, fair and for boxing… then it’s not my fight.
42-0 and I leave in peace. Thank you to everyone who understood the message.”
At 3:11 in the morning, #ThankYouBud surpassed 10 million mentions.
Boxing has never seen anything like it: an undefeated champion willing to hang up his gloves rather than fight under conditions he considers “a betrayal of the sport.”
The emergency meeting between PBC, Golden Boy and the teams of both fighters is scheduled for tomorrow.
And the whole world holds its breath.
