Some WNBA drama is heating up in Chicago, and it’s something serious as it seems. Angel Reese hasn’t played for the Sky since July 29, and now one of her loudest critics says she’s not hurt at all. Conservative sports commentator Jason Whitlock believes the star forward has “quit” on her team as their season heads toward a rough ending.
The Sky sit at 8-23 and are all but out of the playoff race. Reese has been listed as day-to-day with a back injury for over two weeks, but no one has given a clear explanation on how it happened or when she’ll be back. That silence has opened the door for speculation, and Whitlock is walking right through it.
“I think she’s quit on the Chicago Sky,” Whitlock unfolded on Monday. “She’s been claiming a back injury basically since the All-Star break, and there’s no details. Every day, we hear that Angel Reese is day-to-day, and every week, there’s no update on what she is struggling with, what she’s doing.”

Whitlock pointed to a recent game against the Indiana Fever as proof of his theory. The Sky got blown out in Indianapolis, and Reese didn’t make the trip. “Guess who wasn’t there? Angel Reese,” he said. “Her coach said something about she’s just focused on her rehab right now, and she’s day-to-day.”
He also questioned the lack of transparency from Reese or the team. “We’ve never had an explanation on what caused the back injury, what’s a time frame for her recovery,” Whitlock added. “All we’ve heard is day-to-day, and Angel Reese has disappeared.”
Whitlock compared Reese’s absence to NBA star Kawhi Leonard’s approach in recent years, when Leonard often sat out games despite appearing healthy. “I think this is a worse version of Kawhi Leonard,” Whitlock said.
Reese hasn’t fired back at Whitlock’s comments directly. Her only public remark in recent weeks came in a short social media post: “In due time.” On Monday, she watched Sky practice from courtside in a hoodie while her teammates ran drills.
Interestingly, Whitlock has been more complimentary of Reese this season compared to last year, when he regularly criticized her game and attitude. But this time, he says, her silence and absence speak louder than anything else.
Whether Reese’s injury is as serious as reported or Whitlock’s theory holds any weight, but the conversation around her will be going a long way.
