COLORADO BUFFALOES star Dominiq Ponder has tragically died aged 23 after being involved in a car crash.

Ponder died in the early hours on Sunday morning in Boulder, Colorado, after he lost control of his Tesla Model 3.

The quarterback crashed into a guardrail before his vehicle rolled down an embankment and caught fire, according to Denver station KDVR.

The Buffaloes announced his death on Sunday and said they were “heartbroken” by the news.

In a statement, they said: “The University of Colorado Athletic Department is heartbroken over the loss of Dominiq Ponder, who passed away tragically in a car accident early Sunday morning.

“CU Athletics is making counseling resources available to student-athletes and staff to assist during this time of unimaginable loss.

Coach Deion Sanders said: “God, please comfort the entire Ponder family during this difficult time.

“Dominiq was one of my favorites because of his passion, his heart and his willingness to go beyond what was asked.

“He will certainly be remembered, missed, and in our thoughts and prayers.”

Buffaloes offensive coordinator Brennan Marion wrote: “A joy to be around & coach! gonna be tough but man this one hurts Lord, getting that call from his dad today didn’t feel real.

‘Love you Dom! God cover his family & our team, especially our qb room!’

The Big 12 also paid tribute as they said they were “deeply saddened” by his loss.

They added: “We extend our condolences to the Ponder family and Dominiq’s loved ones. Our thoughts are with the entire CU community during this difficult time.”

The third-year sophomore, from Florida, was hailed as “a great kid” by fans on social media.

Another said: “I’ve just now heard of Dominiq Ponder’s passing and wanted to express my condolences towards the Ponder family as they handle the loss of their cousin, brother, and son. Rest well Dominiq, you’re in good hands now.”

A third added: “RIP Dominiq Ponder Heartbreaking loss at just 23. Prayers to his family, Coach Prime, and the Buffs.”

Ponder transferred to the Buffaloes from Bethune Cookman in 2024 and made two appearances in the 2025 season.
