Jenna Bush Hager Admits She Once Escaped Secret Service for a Secret College Romance

In a candid and humorous confession on Today with Jenna & FriendsJenna Bush Hager opened up about a rebellious chapter of her college years — one that even her Secret Service detail didn’t see coming.

The 43-year-old daughter of former President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush revealed that, during her time at the University of Texas at Austin, she once successfully evaded the Secret Service to sneak out and visit a football player she was secretly dating. “I hesitate even saying this,” she laughed, “but I dated a football player at Texas for a brief time, and I was embarrassed that the Secret Service would know.”

At the time, Jenna was navigating college life under constant watch. “Senior year was active for me,” she admitted with a grin. Determined to maintain some privacy, she enlisted the help of friends to smuggle her out of her dorm. “I was in the back of the car, and they snuck me past the Secret Service,” she confessed — calling it “the only time I escaped them.”

Her co-host Savannah Guthrie playfully teased, “So they thought you were home in bed reading the Bible — and you were at the football player’s house?” Jenna burst into laughter, admitting, “Then we broke up soon after.”

The story delighted audiences, offering a rare glimpse into the former First Daughter’s attempt at normal young love despite the spotlight that followed her. It was a moment of teenage rebellion wrapped in secrecy — one that showcased Jenna’s relatable side beyond the polished television persona.

Jenna also reflected on her college dating years, sharing that she wished she’d been a little more adventurous before settling down. “I was a serial monogamist,” she said in a previous Today segment. “I dated in college and high school, but I should have dated more.”

Now happily married to Henry Hager since 2008, Jenna is a mom of three — daughters Mila (12) and Poppy (10), and son Hal (6). She often jokes about her wilder college days compared to her current life as a devoted mother and book lover.

Her latest revelation adds to a growing list of lighthearted anecdotes she’s shared from her youth — from using fake hotel code names as a teen to accidentally embarrassing her parents during her father’s presidency. Yet this particular story struck a chord because it was both rebellious and deeply human — a young woman yearning for independence in a world that monitored her every move.

“I’ve never admitted this,” Jenna said with a mischievous smile, before confirming once again that it was her only successful Secret Service escape.

It might have been just one night, one fleeting romance — but it’s now one unforgettable story that shows even a former First Daughter couldn’t escape the thrill of being young, in love, and just a little reckless.
