Some get stuck in traffic on their way to work. George Stephanopoulos gets stuck in elevators.

The Good Morning America anchor, 64, needed a rescue team from the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) on Tuesday, July 29, after getting stuck inside an elevator on the way to work, according to an Instagram post by GMA.

In the video, Stephanopoulos stepped down a ladder with the help of FDNY firefighters. As he walked away from the scene, he clapped his hands, grinned at the camera and proclaimed, “Only an hour late!”

On air, Stephanopoulos gave GMA viewers a play-by-play of his “little surprise” during his eventful morning.

“I was coming into the building with the man who keeps me safe, Richie, and we got into the freight elevator, and got to the second floor — and it just stopped,” Stephanopoulos recalled. “Just stopped! Between the second and third floor.”

Stephanopoulos then thanked the FDNY, which had sent a ladder down “through the ceiling” to rescue them.

One of his colleagues then asked him what he did with all that unexpected downtime, which Stephanopoulos estimated to be about an hour and fifteen minutes.

“I answered a lot of emails, I read The New York Times,” he said with a giggle. “It was okay! Rich and I chatted a little bit, and we were safe.”
