HEARTBREAKING: Hoda Kotb BREAKS DOWN During Interview About Her Father

Hoda Kotb Reveals How She Landed Huge Today Hosting Gig
NBC expanded The Today Show with a fourth hour in 2007. Hoda Kotb, Ann Curry, and Natalie Morales were tapped as co-hosts for the first year of the show. Former Live With Regis and Kathie Lee host Kathie Lee Gifford replaced Ann Curry and Natalie Morales as co-host in 2008. Today with Kathie Lee & Hoda aired until 2019 when Kathie Lee Gifford left. She was replaced by Jenna Hager Bush.
Jenna Hager Bush became the sole host when Hoda Kotb left in January. Today with Jenna & Friends features guest co-hosts until a permanent replacement is named.
Hoda Kotb has been with NBC since 1998. She began as a Dateline correspondent before joining the fourth hour of The Today Show. She was also a co-anchor on the earlier Today Show from 2018 until 2025.

She left the morning news show earlier this year to spend more time with her kids, Haley and Hope. Hoda recently sat down with Meet The Press journalist Kristen Welker. The former Today Show host revealed her daughter’s reaction to the first few days when Hoda was home instead of at the studio.
She said, “One day, Kristen, in January, I woke up, and my alarm didn’t go off at 3:30…I went downstairs to my office. And Haley ran down…she looked at me. And she said at 5:00 a.m., she said, ‘You really are here.’”
Hoda Kotb also revealed how she got the coveted spot on the fourth hour of The Today Show in 2007. “Girl, I asked for it,” she bluntly admitted. After years of working with the network without a promotion, Hoda Kotb realized that you have to ask for what you want.
She Breaks Down Over Father
Regrettably, Hoda Kotb’s father didn’t get to see his daughter’s success. He passed away from a heart attack when she was in college.
Kristen Welker asked Hoda what her late father would think of her accomplishments. In an emotional moment, the former Today Show host opened up about wanting to hear her father say he was proud of her. He never got the chance.
“I think he’d be incredibly proud of me as a mother. Like, I did that. I think he would be super proud of me that I took a risk in my professional life, too, and tried something new because that’s what he did. He took risks. I think he’d be proud to know that,” Hoda Kotb said.
