Sophie Cunningham has always found a way to stay in the headlines, but not all for the right reasons. Recently, Minnesota Lynx superstar Napheesa Collier mentioned that the league is getting toxic. With the WNBA’s increased competitiveness, fans and players are getting on each other’s nerves. While fans’ emotions and enthusiasm are understandable, players’ fighting on the court is indeed an ugly scene.
In the recent episode of the ‘Show Me Something’ podcast, Sophie Cunningham touched on the subject. She gave an example of a game against the Dallas Wings. Ironically, the fierce competitor on the court was laughing about the ‘hate’.
Sophie Cunningham Opens Up About Battling Paige Bueckers
Since being traded to the Indiana Fever, the former Baylor star has been enjoying a productive phase. She impacts the game at both ends of the floor, with some high-scoring games and defensive stops. Cunningham is known for speaking her mind, and her podcast is already a massive hit. In the recent episode, she talked about her experience playing against the Dallas Wings’ superstar Paige Bueckers.
As a primary defender on Bueckers, Sophie Cunningham was the subject of a narrative about hating the Wings’ rookie. But the Fever star brushed aside the consensus and shared that they have a good relationship.
“People want us to hate each other so bad…dude, we were literally laughing and talking to each other. People want us to hate each other so bad, every time,” Cunningham stated after praising Bueckers.
Cunningham even added that they shared a laugh over the referee’s missed foul call during the game. She praised the 2025 top pick for her gameplay earlier in the interview. Moreover, she already called Paige Bueckers a strong contender for the Rookie of the Year award. Interestingly, Cunningham’s teammate is constantly compared with the Wings’ guard.
Sophie Cunningham Will Have Extra Responsibility Following Multiple Injuries On Roster
There might be fun and laughter off the court. Still, the former Phoenix player will now have to bear more responsibility on the court following injuries to Aari McDonald and Sydney Colson. With Clark out of the rotation, the team is without a true point guard. Cunningham ran the offense for Stephanie White during the preseason games.
She even played a huge role in the win over the Mystics and later against the Brazilian national team. She also started many games at guard. This highlighted her versatility and adaptability, which will be helpful for the Fever franchise until the team figures out a solution for the injury crisis.

Sophie Cunningham’s instant opponent will be the Chicago Sky. The arch rivals will play their fourth and final regular-season game against the Indiana Fever. Standing in fifth position, Indiana will look for a win to push for a higher ranking despite all adversity.
