Luka Doncic may have taken the high road after his departure from the Dallas Mavericks. But the team he once led to playoff success is far from silent behind the scenes. While the Slovenian star has made no public comments disparaging the Mavericks, subtle signs and insider reports suggest a deep disconnect that preceded his trade.

It wasn’t just the roster shift that raised eyebrows. After the trade, Mavericks officials were unusually vocal about Doncic’s off-court habits.

On a recent episode of NBA Today, veteran NBA insider Marc J. Spears offered a glimpse into the Mavericks’ side of the story. Spears hinted that the public has only heard a fraction of what really happened.

“You know, and that’s perhaps a big part of why he’s not there anymore. You know, I think for Dallas, too, like. While you heard a lot of negative things, there probably is a lot of stuff that they’re not saying. There’s stories that I’ve heard that they’re not saying,” Spears said.


One of the Mavericks’ most well-known gripes was Doncic’s physical shape. Yet this offseason, Doncic appears to be rewriting that narrative. He has undergone visible physical changes and made fitness a priority. Spears credited the star for finally taking accountability in his own way.

 

“But ultimately, he has to be accountable. He may not have been accountable with his words, but he’s accountable with his body because he made the change,” he added.

In a recent interview with NBC News, Doncic revealed a surprising move in his offseason routine. Luka said that he stepped away from basketball completely for the first time in his life.

“I actually gave up playing basketball for one month which I never done in my whole life. Mentally, basketball I’ve been playing my whole life, so I won’t forget how to play basketball in one month,” Luka said.

The break appears to have helped clear his mind. Seemingly, he is looking to reset mentally before gearing up for his first full season in Los Angeles.

WNBA star Brittney Griner was at the center of a new debate over what she allegedly said in a game against basketball phenom Caitlin Clark.

The Atlanta Dream center found herself at the center of social media controversy last month when some fans thought she disparaged Indiana Fever star guard Caitlin Clark upon fouling out.

The game’s broadcast focused on an upset Griner saying something as she returned to the Dream bench after fouling out of the game. While there’s no audio of this moment, some who tried to read Griner’s lips thought she called Clark a “trash f–king white girl.”

However, there’s no proof of Griner saying those actual words since others thought she stated something else.

It took weeks for someone to finally get a quote from her, and she provided much of nothing.

Brittney Griner was asked about this moment before her team’s June 15 game against the Washington Mystics and said, “I remember fouling out, being mad. I remember fouling out on, I believe it was [Natasha] Howard driving to the basket. They said I put my hand in.”

Moments before the conclusion of the Indiana Fever’s 81-76 victory over the Dream at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta weeks ago, cameras seemingly caught Atlanta Dream star center Brittney Griner labeling Caitlin Clark “trash” before calling her a “f***ing white girl” in frustration over a foul on Natasha Howard.

The clip of Griner speaking on the bench, lacking context, spread on social media and went viral.

Griner, who won a gold medal for Team USA at the Summer Olympics in Paris in 2024, essentially got aw@y with whatever came out of her mouth because the league basically ignored the controversy.

This incident is not the only time Griner vocalized her frustrations this season. Following another game, she stormed off mid-interview, yelling at the referees to “be f—ing better.
