ESPN Makes Decision On Troy Aikman After Landing New NFL Job
ESPN has no plans to change Troy Aikman’s role after the Hall of Fame quarterback took on a short-term NFL consulting job.
Aikman recently agreed to help the Miami Dolphins during their search for a new general manager. The move got some quick questions about his future on “Monday Night Football,” where he serves as ESPN’s lead color commentator. However, those concerns did not last long.
An ESPN spokesperson shut down any speculation about a shakeup. “It doesn’t interfere with his responsibilities with us,” the spokesperson told Front Office Sports. “His schedule remains unchanged.” ESPN made it clear that Aikman will continue his regular on-air duties alongside Joe Buck.
With the NFL offseason approaching, the timing caught some attention. For Aikman, who often gets mixed opinions as a commentator, it is simply another step in a long post-playing career that has already included many years in the broadcast booth.

Aikman confirmed his interest in an executive role earlier this week. He spoke openly about it during an appearance on the “Sports Business Radio” podcast. He stressed that he remains open to new challenges.

“I’m not opposed to hard work,” Aikman said, via Awful Announcing. “It’s not so much the hours that would be involved, it’s more about at my age currently, there would be a learning curve.” He also questioned whether teams would allow that process. “I do feel like I could be a real asset to an organization,” he added.
The Dolphins decided to take him up on that idea. ESPN insider Adam Schefter reported the agreement on Thursday. “The Miami Dolphins have brought on Hall-of-Fame QB and ESPN analyst Troy Aikman as a consultant to advise the organization on its general manager search process,” Schefter wrote. He also noted that the role will not last long and will not turn permanent.

Aikman earned respect around the NFL long before he ever worked on TV. He won three Super Bowls with the Dallas Cowboys and later entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Since 2022, he has been one of the main voices of “Monday Night Football,” and his chemistry with Buck is unmatched, where they recently mentioned that the NFL is scripted.
Fans will hear Aikman again this Saturday night. He is set to call the game between the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers, with the No. 1 seed at stake.
For now, nothing changes. Aikman helps the Dolphins as a consultant and continues calling games for ESPN. The two roles do not conflict, and both sides are keeping it simple.
