Pittsburgh Steelers Reportedly Have Their Head Coach Replacement For Mike Tomlin
If the Pittsburgh Steelers move on from head coach Mike Tomlin after the season, they’ll reportedly eye one of Sean McVay’s sought-after assistants.
Mike Tomlin’s future with the Steelers has been a topic of discussion during a turbulent 2025 season. Disgruntled fans called for Tomlin to get fired after an ugly Nov. 30 home loss to the Buffalo Bills.
Calls will only grow for Pittsburgh to make a change if they lose Sunday’s win-or-go-home contest against the Baltimore Ravens. And according to a report, the Steelers have one potential replacement in mind.
Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer reports that Tomlin could actually choose to leave the Steelers and take a break from coaching. One possible replacement? Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula:
“The Steelers, Ravens and Bills have generated conversation in recent weeks. Is there any reality to it? I don’t think these would be firings. But there is some thought that Mike Tomlin could look at a reset, with the Pittsburgh roster potentially going through one soon too, and take a year or two in TV before returning to the sideline. And interestingly enough, Shula’s name has been connected to the Steelers, in case there is an opening.”
Sean McVay has quite the coaching tree, including Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur, Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor, Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell and Atlanta Falcons head coach Raheem Morris.

If Tomlin and the Steelers take care of business on Sunday, they’ll host a playoff game against a vulnerable wild-card opponent. And if Pittsburgh wins its first postseason game since 2016? That will put an end to speculation about a possible coaching change.

However, it’ll be challenging to make a case for the partnership to continue if the Steelers lose at home to a vulnerable Baltimore team. Losing on the road to the Cleveland Browns was bad enough as is last week. They can’t blow a second opportunity at the division crown.
