Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel strongly indicated that he may have to bench Tua Tagovailoa following Sunday’s ugly 31-6 blowout loss to the Cleveland Browns.

The Dolphins’ nightmare start to 2025 hit a new low on Sunday, as they proved to be no match for a Cleveland team that entered Sunday with a 1-5 record. Tua Tagovailoa had a horrific outing against one of the league’s worst defenses, completing 12 of 23 pass attempts for 100 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions.

After the game, coach McDaniel sounded like he was nearing the end of his rope with the $212.4 million quarterback, per ESPN’s Marcel Louis-Jacques:

“There’s a lot of guys that will have an important work week,” he said. “I mean, if you are negatively affecting the football team routinely, I don’t have a choice but to assess a different player, and I have to coach a lot better, as well. So, we’re going to find out who and what we’re made of.

No person, no player or no coach has got their hands clean, and we have to go back to work and — starting with me — do a better job.

We will watch the tape and change our style of play if we have to — everything’s on the table. When you go to a game you fully know that you have the capability to win, and get handed a very, very humbling loss, there’s no if, ands or buts about it. Guys need to be professionals and guys need to step up to the plate. And every person on our team, if you’re saying, ‘It’s not me,’ it’s you.”

McDaniel and the Dolphins were dealt a huge blow when Tyreek Hill suffered a gruesome season-ending knee injury in Week 4 against the New York Jets. Sure enough, their offense has cratered without the perennial All-Pro wide receiver.

Tua Tagovailoa’s career high in interceptions is 14, thrown on 560 pass attempts in the 2023 campaign. In 205 pass attempts thus far, the 2020 first-round pick already had 10 interceptions.
