Miami Staffer Reveals Shocking Reason Why Hurricanes RB Mark Fletcher Jr. Punched Indiana’s Tyrique Tucker After National Championship Game
Mark Fletcher Jr.’s punch on Tyrique Tucker quickly went viral.
A Miami Hurricanes staff member claims that an out-of-line comment caused running back Mark Fletcher Jr. to throw a punch at Tyrique Tucker after Monday’s national championship game.

Following Indiana’s 27-21 victory over Miami in the national championship game, ESPN’s cameras showed Mark Fletcher Jr. throwing a punch at Tyrique Tucker. The two exchanged words during the altercation, and a Miami staffer had to step in to break it up.
Naturally, some fans just assumed it was a heat-of-the-moment thing for Fletcher, who was obviously upset after a heartbreaking defeat.
But according to Miami Hurricanes director of recruiting Mike Rumph, Fletcher was retaliating for a cruel comment by Tucker. According to Rumph, Tucker allegedly said something about Mark Fletcher Jr.’s father, who passed away in October 2024.
Speaking to The Herald-Times after the game, Tucker gave his side of the story:
“I was just trying to congratulate him on the game. He tried to sneak me, everybody kind of held me back. That was a cheap punch. Luckily, we got the win, I’m not really too worried about it. He’s salty, he going home with the L.”
Fletcher Jr. finished the game with 112 rushing yards and two touchdowns on two carries. Tucker had one tackle in the game.

Back in December, Fletcher Jr. announced that he was returning to the Hurricanes for the 2026 season. He was previously considered one of the stronger running back prospects in the NFL Draft, but Fletcher isn’t ready to turn pro just yet.
Several other highly-touted prospects also decided to return to college for 2026, including star quarterback Dante Moore. Before his announcement, the Oregon quarterback was considered a top-two QB prospect with Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza.
So, Fletcher will get the opportunity to chase the national championship again in 2026. The team will look a lot different, though. Edge rushers Rueben Bain Jr. and Akheem Mesidor, offensive tackle Francis Mauigoa and quarterback Carson Beck are among Miami’s top players ready to make the jump to the NFL.
