Police have been investigating the matter for five months.

According to the Albermarle County Police Department in Virginia, Edrine was indicted by a grand jury on Monday. The authorities began their probe on August 25, 2025. It resulted from a report of sexual assault being made the day before, just one week before UVA’s season opener.

The cops revealed that, “Following several months of investigation, on Monday, Feb. 2, 2026, an Albemarle County grand jury indicted 22-year-old Jahmal Edrine of Charlottesville, Va., with Rape and Abduction.”

Virginia told People in a statement that he was no longer a student at the university.

“The University is aware of this matter,” a spokesperson said. “While the University is prohibited by federal student privacy law from commenting on specific cases, we can confirm that this individual is not currently enrolled at the University.

“Albemarle County Police are continuing their investigation into this matter and the University will cooperate fully with that investigation,” they added.
