Fernando Mendoza’s Brother Alberto Takes Action For Indiana QB After Betraying Curt Cignetti
Alberto Mendoza leaves Indiana but claps back at brother Fernando’s critics with pointed Instagram message hours after championship victory.
Alberto Mendoza picked a hell of a time to leave. Hours after his brother, Fernando Mendoza, won a national championship, the backup quarterback entered the transfer portal. Curt Cignetti just watched his program lose another Mendoza. But Alberto wasn’t done making moves on Thursday.
Fernando posted photos from Monday’s title game on Instagram. Alberto reshared them with three words: “Big beef stamped it.” The message landed like a punch aimed straight at Jason Brown and everyone else questioning Fernando’s legitimacy before the 27-21 win over Miami. Brown had spent the week trashing the Heisman winner, and Alberto fired back the only way that mattered.

Brown posted his attack before Indiana in the championship game. “I can’t wait for Friday to cook all the Mendoza fan boys after watching him play real dudes,” Brown wrote. He called Fernando the “worst heisman trophy winner in last 25 years.”
The portal entry looked ugly for Indiana. Alberto, following his brother out the door, feels like abandonment. But that Instagram post shows where his head’s at. He’s chasing playing time, not running from the program.

Curt Cignetti knew this was happening weeks ago.
“His words were I’ll stay a year, but he’s got to go out early and then I’m the guy,” Cignetti said before the title game. “We’ll see what happens there with Alberto.” Indiana brought in Josh Hoover from TCU earlier this month. That move sealed Alberto’s fate as a backup for another year.

Alberto completed 18 of 24 throws for 286 yards this season. Five touchdowns against one pick. He ran 13 times for 190 yards. Those numbers get you noticed when quarterback rooms are empty across the country. Georgia Tech wants him badly, according to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz. Florida State and Miami are watching, too.
Fernando threw 41 touchdowns against six interceptions this season. He ran for the game-winner on Monday with nine minutes left. Alberto saw a champion and said it out loud on Instagram. Leaving Bloomington doesn’t mean forgetting what happened there.
