Curt Cignetti Learns The Brutal Cost Of Success As Things Unravel At Indiana

Curt Cignetti is going to have to defend his title under vastly different circumstances.

Indiana head coach Curt Cignetti was on top of the world last Monday. But he could be scrambling for reinforcements after certain player decisions.

The Indiana head coach joked about possibly retiring after leading the Hoosiers to a 27-21 win over the Miami Hurricanes.

Indiana enjoyed a perfect campaign under Cignetti, going 16-0. The emergence of Fernando Mendoza as the best player in the nation had plenty to do with that. Consequently, Mendoza is headed to the pros.

The star QB is projected to go No. 1 overall following a season that saw him capture both the national title and the Heisman.

His younger brother, Alberto Mendoza, is also transferring.

Meanwhile, star wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr. has declared for the NFL Draft despite one remaining year of eligibility.

Cooper led the program in both receptions and receiving yards with 69 and 937, respectively. He also made the second-most touchdown catches with 13.

“To my coaches — thank you for your trust, guidance, and for helping me become the player I am today,” he wrote on Monday. “Thank you for believing in me and pushing me every day to grow on and off the field.”

“This program pushed me, shaped me and gave me memories I’ll carry forever. With gratitude for this journey and faith in what lies ahead, I am declaring for the 2026 NFL draft,” he concluded.

All-American cornerback D’Angelo Ponds has declared for the draft, too.

Cignetti oversaw an impressive turnaround at Indiana in just two years. Now, he’s set for the challenge of having to do it all over again with a different group.

While multiple NFL teams reportedly considered him as a candidate in this cycle, he has rejected the idea of a move. And he’s going to attempt to keep the Hoosiers at the top of the pile for at least another season.

It should make for an interesting watch.
