Houston Texans Waive Star Running Back Ahead Of ‘TNF’ vs. Buffalo Bills

In a surprise roster move, the Houston Texans have decided to waive veteran running back and fan favorite Dameon Pierce.

Per Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team, the Texans waived Dameon Pierce ahead of their ‘Thursday Night Football’ clash with the Buffalo Bills. He missed time with a hamstring earlier this year and was limited to four games before getting waived by the AFC South club.

In other roster moves, the Texans signed former Las Vegas Raiders first-round pick and cornerback Damon Arnette to their practice squad and elevated rookie cornerback Ajani Carter from the practice squad to the active roster.

The waiving of Pierce came hours after ESPN reported that star running back Joe Mixon is unlikely to play this season as he continues to recover from a foot injury. Houston has leaned on veteran Nick Chubb and rookie Woody Marks to lead the ground game.

Regarding tonight’s matchup, the Bills are also making sophomore wideout Keon Coleman a healthy scratch for the second consecutive game.

Dameon Pierce Never Regained The Magic From His 2022 Rookie Year

Dameon Pierce had an excellent rookie season for a lowly Houston squad in 2022, rushing for 939 yards and four touchdowns to go along with 1,104 rushing yards and five total touchdowns.

But Pierce was never able to regain that star-like form, even after the Texans emerged as contenders in 2023 and 2024. Veteran Devin Singletary finished 2023 as Houston’s lead rusher (898 yards), and Mixon took over as the RB1 after coming over via trade the following year.

Pierce has only played 29 games over the last three years, but we saw what he can do in an expanded role. Teams are always looking for running back depth, so Pierce should get another job before the postseason begins.
