Cardinals QB Kyler Murray Is Officially Done In Shocking Turn Of Events

Kyler Murray’s frustrating 2025 NFL season has quickly gone from bad to worse.

A day after the Arizona Cardinals announced that Jacoby Brissett would remain the starting quarterback, the team has placed Kyler Murray on the injured reserve as he continues to recover from a nagging foot injury, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Going on the IR requires Murray to miss a minimum of four games, so he won’t be eligible to return until Week 14 against the Los Angeles Rams on Dec. 7. He’ll miss games against the Seattle Seahawks, San Francisco 49ers, Jacksonville Jaguars and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Kyler Murray has missed the Cardinals’ last three games, and Jacoby Brissett has been excellent in relief, throwing six touchdowns and only one interception over that period.

Arizona narrowly lost 31-27 to the heavily favored Indianapolis Colts on the road in Week 6, with Brissett throwing for 320 yards in that game. In Week 7, Brissett and the Cardinals barely fell 27-23 to the powerhouse Green Bay Packers.

And on Monday night, Brissett completed 21 passes for 261 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Notably, second-year wideout Marvin Harrison Jr. has finally looked like a budding star with nine catches for 154 yards and a touchdown over his last two games.

It’s already Kyler Murray’s seventh season in the NFL, and there aren’t any signs that he’ll reach that MVP level they’ve waited a while for. At some point, the Cardinals have to accept that he’s merely a mid-tier quarterback.

As noted by ESPN’s Dan Graziano, releasing Murray in the offseason would cost Arizona $54.7 million. Graziano noted that the Denver Broncos took on far more dead money ($85 million) when they released Russell Wilson on 2024, but Bo Nix’s emergence has the AFC West club regretting nothing.

Results are results. Brissett has taken this offense to another level that Kyler Murray couldn’t over his first five games. If Brissett finishes the season strong, Arizona oughta move on from Murray, but there could even be some interested parties in the trade market.
