The question of what time is best to serve up your Thanksgiving dinner remains a point that’s always up for debate.
maker Martha Stewart appeared to settle the argument as she gave her advice on when is best to enjoy a tasty meal for Thanksgiving, but she only sparked further debate over the issue.
Martha shared her ideal timeline for when dinner should be served in a new interview.
Speaking on Today on Thursday, November 13, Martha, 84, appeared wearing a sash that said “Thanksgiving” as she explained her stance. She said, “2 o’clock in the afternoon. People are hungry! And they’re starting to circle the kitchen.”
“You know, if you have a bunch of guests, you don’t want to wait until nighttime. You can eat, and then watch the big game, and then have more drinks and have fun, and eat dessert later.”

Fans then took to social media to further discuss the point. One wrote, “I am in central California. I have had meals start as early as 2pm and as late as 7:30pm. I think it depends on the family.” A second said, “Basically: You need enough time beforehand to get really hungry, you need plenty of time afterwards to digest your stuff-ed-ness.”
A third shared, “Aim for 2pm, usually more like 3pm. Gives the host time to get everything prepped, and guests time to get there, eat, socialise and be home at a decent hour, leaving the host plenty of time to clean up.”
A fourth social media user offered, “Main course is at noon this year, with early arrivals eating snacks from deviled eggs to a cheese/meat tray. Leftovers start as early as 5 to 6 pm, depending on whether the guests have had enough Yahtzee/cards/TV.”
A fifth commented, “I’m (64f) the grandma, and so, therefore (by default and because I love to do it), I am the hostess. I have Thanksgiving dinner prepared around the usual dinner time: 5pm or so. I am a night owl. I dislike having a big, heavy meal early in the day, and I don’t want to have to get up at the ass crack of dawn to start cooking.

“I do a lot of preparation in the days beforehand. I know when to start what so everything is done around the same time.”
Another echoed, “2 pm. Everybody arrives about 12:30 or 1:00 and helps with the final meal prep, putting the 4×8 sheet of plywood on the table, setting the table, rounding up the extra chairs, etc. We take a break before dessert to clean up and watch football, then reconvene at 5:00 for pies, followed by spiked coffee. The families with little kids go home, and the rest of us hang around till it’s time to snack on leftovers.”
